As often in live there is not only one but there are several causes for something. This is the same with osteoarthritis. In most of the cases, osteoarthritis is a long-term consequence of (over-) utilization of the joints for many years.
What about “eating off” osteoarthritis? This would be a great thing! Unfortunately, there is no such a thing as an osteoarthritis-diet. But choosing the right food can help reduce symptoms of an existing osteoarthritis.
As soon as it starts to get cold, grey and foggy outside, we prefer to stay in our warm living room instead of running around in grim weather.
People who work hard physically often believe that there is no need for extra exercise. They think that the exercise they do during their job is sufficient. Unfortunately, they are wrong.
Nobody consults a physician immediately just because there is a pain now and then. As long as it is still possible to move one’s body more or less, we just go on.
In a healthy joint it is the synovia that absorbs shocks and enables movements with as little friction as possible. Besides that, this clear liquid serves as transport agent for nutrients like glucose or amino acids to nourish the joint cartilage. And on the other hand, it disposes of waste products.
Depending on age, gonarthrosis (knee osteoarthritis) is the most common type of osteoarthritis. Incidence rises with increasing age and in the age group of 70 to74 years it reaches up to 40 percent.
An illness is rarely the cause for back pains. In 90 % of the cases, badly trained muscles are the cause for back pain. We spend most of the time sitting, be it at home on the sofa or in the office, using our back muscles less and less, causing their weakening.
- If the sciatic nerve is irritated, we are talking about a so-called „ischialgia“.
- The pain spreads in the area of the hips, buttocks and the thighs.
- Sciatic pain is described as stabbing, burning or cutting. The affected area is pressure- sensitive.
- A person, suffering from sciatic pain, adopts a relieving posture (bending the leg while standing, with the upper body tilt).
If someone has a backache, the suspect very often is the vertebral disc. But in fact, a herniated vertebral disc is much less responsible for back pain than what is generally believed.
Everybody knows that regular exercise keeps healthy and is good for body and soul. But what if our joints refuse their service when practicing your favorite sport? If, due to rheumatism, osteoarthritis or excessive stress, we should not put even more strain on them, we must cancel some types of sport, like for example jogging, completely.
It is generally known that the practice of sports is beneficial as well for the physical as for the psychical health. But like everywhere the golden path between too much and to little is small and the ideal must be found.
